A Marriage of Hospitality and the Arts
While portrait-painting has always fascinated the South African born artist, sculpting has captivated Juanita since her 2019 immigration to Australia. She loves the hands-on approach that wire-sculpting offers: “It’s like I’m painting 3-dimensionally with my hands as the brushes.” It seems fit to her to have found a new medium on a new continent – and now more specifically at Suffoir’s cellar door.
After painting the first of two murals at Suffoir, spray paint has become another intrigue for Juanita. She will be exploring with spray paint and wire sculpting as she prepares for Suffoir’s Art@Suffoir exhibition which will be held in October 2022. This exhibition will showcase the talent of local artists and musicians, celebrated with good food and great company.
Owners Pieter and Michelle Badenhorst are excited about this collaboration between hospitality and the arts. The initiative came about quite organically after they signed up to host the inaugural Queenscliff Art competition earlier this year.
The team has been fortunate to receive a grant from the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia. This will help them enter into the arts scene with bravado. They will host their own People’s Choice Award where visitors can select their favourite of 30 art panels that are showcased on the property. The winner will be announced at the Art@Suffoir exhibition in October.
